The List

Half of the names on the list had already been crossed off. The same number as there were murders over the last month. Joe knew two of the four victims, and he knows the seventh person on the list.

When Joe saw his name at the bottom, he fought the urge to throw up. He sat there gazing at the list while he tried to think why his name would be on it, and what he might have in common with the two names he knew. The three of them shared a story of having a one night stand with a blond named Annie.

Joe had to let Kevin know his name was on a hit list. Joe didn’t know him well. Keven joined Joe’s fantasy baseball league this year. He almost ripped the address book he kept Kevin’s phone number in. He picked up on the third ring.

“It’s Joe. Can you come over to my house?” he gulped in some air. “I need to show you something.”

Joe felt awkward asking Kevin if he slept with Annie. When he answered yes, Joe showed him the list. He reacted the same way Joe did, but with more emotion.

After calming down, Kevin shared a similar story except for one thing. They went back to her place, and the roommate didn’t seem happy about Annie having an over night guest.

Joe told Kevin to get into his car. On the way to the police station, the car behind them bumped into the car while at a red light.

In the mirror Joe saw a woman jump out of a car and was walking toward his door. Joe climbed out and met her half way.

“Its the roommate,” Kevin shouted from behind.

When Joe turned to see Kevin exiting the car, he felt something sharp against his back. Joe raised his hands as if he was surrendering.

“Stay away from Annie,” she whispered in his ear. “I love her and we’re going to get married.”

Joe herd a ping on the pavement and relief on his back. She was on her back screaming in pain, clutching her knee.

Annie stood over her roommate leaning on a baseball bat. She started to cry, and knelt down proclaiming her love for her.

Annie picked up the knife and jammed it into her roommate’s chest.
